Project Stargate: OpenAI's Massive $500 Billion Data Center being built in Abilene Texas
Why a place you have never heard of in Texas could become the next Silicon Valley
The Stargate Project is a monumental $500 billion artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure initiative spearheaded by OpenAI, SoftBank, Oracle, and MGX. This massive project was publicly announced in January 2025 under Trump Administration, and is under construction in Abilene, Texas.
The news would initially set everything on fire news wide, I wrote about it previously but since then, things have escalated with ground being broke since June of 2024
If I told you this construction site was huge, that might be an understatement, it’s more colossal in definition. The first data center being built as part of the project is in Abilene, Texas a small town with a population of only 125,000 people. The site when finished will make it the largest data center project in the world….

The scale, timeline and infrastructure key details of Project Stargate
Location & Scale: The Abilene campus spans approximately 875 acres (size of Central Park in NYC) and is set to house 10 massive data center buildings, each around 500,000 square feet. There are plans to expand to 20 additional sites across the U.S. This is a massive project obviously but 875 acres is freaking massive which leads me to my next question….how long will this project take to complete? Not sure exactly when but from what I gathered “when” completed it’ll be one of the largest infrastructure projects in American History. So, lets take a look deeper
Construction Timeline: The first two buildings, totaling 980,000 square feet, are expected to be operational by mid-2025. The second phase, adding six more buildings, aims for completion by mid-2026, culminating in a total of eight buildings with a power capacity of 1.2 gigawatts. Thats a lot of power, when you really think about it. The most important part though, in my opinion is the chips, no not those chips, I am talking about semiconductor chips. You may be wondering, what are semiconductor chips, they are the building blocks of most electronics. They process data, power screens, and even manage battery life. Without them, many digital devices wouldn't function like this MacBook I am typing this out on right this minute or that device you’re reading this on right this minute
Technology Deployment: OpenAI and Oracle plan to install 64,000 NVIDIA GB200 GPUs at the Abilene site by the end of 2026, and this is all speculation, but if it happens, those of you who own Nvidia stock, god bless you
The key players involved in the project
The ownership structure of this joint venture with OpenAI and SoftBank each holding 40% stakes is a match made in heaven. SoftBanks CEO Masayoshi Son serves as chairman. A fun fact about Masayoshi is that he once owned a large stake in Nvidia early on according to Jensen Huang (Nvidia CEO) as an early investor in a 3 Trillion Dollar company (ouch)
ChatGpt maker OpenAI is leading the operational aspects, while SoftBank manages the financial responsibilities.
Key technology partners include these companies below who all are publicly traded companies meaning you can buy shares in them
Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, and Oracle
The project is projected to create over 100,000 jobs nationwide, encompassing construction, operations, and indirect employment. There are regulatory hurdles as expected, such as Texas Senate Bill 6, that is aimed at safeguarding the state's power grid, and could impose up to 24 months of regulatory review and higher infrastructure costs, potentially delaying the project's expansion but we shall see. The project has announced a $500 billion investment plan, some reports indicate that full funding has not yet been secured, with SoftBank and OpenAI each committing over $15 billion initially
The Stargate Project in Abilene represents a significant stride in AI infrastructure development, positioning Texas as a central hub for technological advancement. Now as far as who is leading the project, its a company I hadn’t heard of till recently, Crusoe, a tiny startup company
According to Chase Lochmiller (CEO of Crusoe) “This massive project will advance society like never before”

Although this project has had its fair share of skeptics and critics such as xAI, Tesla, CEO Elon Musk, Project Stargate has been widely lauded as a historic move and has even inspired other projects such as UAE version of Stargate
Despite the enthusiasm for the project, several are skeptical about the entire Stargate project, and especially the comments made by Oracle founder Larry Ellison who claimed AI tools will create early detection of cancer when he said this below
“Imagine early cancer detection, the development of a cancer vaccine for your particular cancer aimed at you, and having that vaccine available in 48 hours,” Ellison remarked. “This is the promise of AI and the promise of the future.”
The controversial American physician and scientist, Robert W. Malone, was among the first to criticize the project. Robert W. Malone is well known for early research contributions to the development of mRNA technology but also his opposition to widespread usage of the COVID-19 vaccine during the year 2020. Mr Malone had this to say about Project Stargate
“It has the flavor of somebody pitching influential high net worth individuals with a concept that is really smoke and mirrors,” Malone said in an interview with renowned conspiracy theorist Alex Jones this week.
Another physician and professor at the University of California San Francisco, Vinay Prasad, also was quick to condemn Larry Elision the tech giant’s statements as well. I wanted to be clear that this hasn’t All come without skeptics, which adds to the complexity and mystery to it All……..After all, The Manhattan Project which produced the Atom Bomb led by famed American theoretical physicist Dr Robert Oppenheimer was doubted early on but the project would eventually merit not only success but also change the world for good with the bombing of Japanese cities Hiroshima & Nagasaki during World War II.
Stargate is part infrastructure, part national strategy. If it succeeds, it will reshape America's role in AI dominance. If it fails—or stalls—it may become a cautionary tale of ambition outpacing funding. The money being poured into artificial intelligence is a massive bet on AI but a necessary bet on the future of technology and the companies mentioned above are some of the companies putting not only there reputation but money on the line
President Trump had this to say about Project Stargate below
Either way, it’s a development every investor, technologist, and policymaker should be watching closely. Each data center could require tens of thousands of AI chips, creating a ripple effect across:
Foundries
Memory producers
Cooling systems
Optical networking firms
The whole infrastructure becomes a vertical demand stack — chips at the top, rare earths and photonics at the bottom. Make no mistake about this project, its beyond anything you have ever seen led by a unique group
This massive project is being led by a small startup in Crusoe Energy and will reshape the global future of Artificial Intelligence for better, and who knows worst. One thing is clear, the future is unfolding right before our very own eyes
